In California, the Watchtower’s Jehovah’s Witnesses are allowed to set up their ‘witnessing’ tables with absolutely nothing Disney can do about it due to Pruneyard Shopping Center v. Robins, a 1980 Supreme Court case that found that discriminately preventing public campaigning or proselytizing at private shopping centers violates free speech. You’ll also find them set up witnessing at the DMV.
“That’s pretty lame. JWs, and not just noting a few bad apples, have a very toxic outlook on the world, and how they treat family members with spiritual interests that may differ from JW stories or legends or w/e. Definitely not family friendly.”u/Boygunasurf said of the Jehovah’s Witness tables at Disney
Another Disney guest gave their personal experience at the park,
One has approached my husband in front of the Lego store. There was no table nearby. That wasn’t a good experience since his family’s had bad experiences with their religion. It was very triggering for him. He had just lost an uncle/mentor who underwent a major surgery that resulted in complications. The uncle was Jehovah’s Witness and his family refused a blood transfusion due to religion.u/Levetiracetamamam said her husband had an upsetting experience with a Jehovah’s Witness at Downtown Disney
After first saying seeing them didn’t bring back the fondest memories, another former ex-Jehovah’s witness shared their perspective of gratitude for California’s extra protections so everyone may share their views.
