The Jehovah’s Witness blood policy changed substantially on September 18, 2026. In Governing Body Update #6 and an accompanying “Questions From Readers” article, Jehovah’s Witness leadership announced that individual Witnesses may now decide for themselves whether to accept red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, or platelets obtained from another person’s blood.^1,2 These four primary blood components had previously been categorically prohibited.

Whole blood from another person remains prohibited. The use of a patient’s own blood in medical and surgical care became a matter of individual conscience earlier this year.^2,3

The September announcement follows the March 2026 change involving a patient’s own blood, including preoperative autologous donation. Taken together, the two changes substantially alter the treatment choices available to Jehovah’s Witness patients and make many longstanding assumptions about “blood refusal” obsolete.
