Jehovah’s Witnesses face trial for discrimination and incitement to hate

Jehovah's Witnesses Belgium

Excerpt from the news article—

‘Shunning’

Jehovah’s Witnesses use shunning as a tactic to keep members from being disloyal to the group, he claims.

“It’s worse than just being excluded,” Haeck told Het Nieuwsblad.

“From the highest levels of the organisation comes the order that no one is allowed to talk to you, not even your own family. They declare that this person must be avoided because they have a mental illness that is contagious.”

Several more former Witnesses have joined the complaint, and stories have flowed out from former members who have been shunned. Cecile Temmerman was a Witness for 35 years when her son began to ask critical questions of the congregation’s elders.

“I knew hundreds of people in the congregation; almost every day someone came over to visit,” she told Het Nieuwsblad.

“From one day to the next, everyone turned their back on me.” She means that literally and figuratively: Witnesses physically turn away from members who are being shunned.

‘In the hands of Satan’

“At a meeting, everyone was warned that my family was in the hands of Satan,” continued Temmerman.

“I had literally no one left in my life; the Witnesses make sure that you have no social contact outside the organisation – including family. Even my very best friend wouldn’t speak to me any more. I sank into a depression.”

The prosecutor in Ghent is bringing four charges again the Belgian congregation: for inciting discrimination on the basis of religious beliefs against a person and against a group, and inciting hatred or violence against a person and against a group.

While Jehovah’s Witnesses have been the target of civil court cases before, this is the first time an entire congregation has ever been charged with a crime.

Haeck hopes this will set a precedent in other countries.

Well, what does the Bible say about shunning? Firstly it is connected with “evil” (evil /’i:iL/ adjectiveκακός nounκακό (neuter). In the Bible, the word shun is applied to evil. The Lord said that His servant Job was “blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil” (Job 1:8). Job himself confessed that “the fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding” (Job 28:28). The Bible advises us, “Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil” (Proverbs 3:7–8). “A wise man fears the Lord and shuns evil” (Proverbs 14:16). So, shunning evil is good. In religious and ecclesiastical contexts, shunning is a form of church discipline against a person who has violated church “rules”. Shunning involves a formal decision by a church that bans interaction with the person being shunned. The extent and duration of the shunning vary among the various groups that practice it. Shunning is often associated with Amish and Mennonite, JW’s, but it is also employed by other churches. Certain cults and traditional societies (such as in Bali) practice severe forms of shunning that can lead to whole families being ostracized from all aspects of society. Shunning goes beyond ex-communication: to be shunned is to be denied personal interaction with church members even in social, non-ecclesiastical settings. (JW’s an example) While shunning may connote legalistic tendencies, and shunning can be misused in ((spiritual manipulation)), there is a proper place for breaking an association. The goal of ex-communication and any form of shunning is restoration (Galatians 6:1). The purpose of any type of discipline is to prompt repentance and, ultimately, to reunite our fallen brother or sister with the church body. Being officially ostracized from the church, the sinner might be brought to repentance. As an example when the man in the Corinthian church later realized that he had sinned against God, he repented and came back to the church for forgiveness and reinstatement. Fellowship with the Corinthian believers was restored (2 Corinthians 2:6–11). Its to be noted that it was the entire congregation that was involved with full knowledge of what had taken place or continuing to occur and that the final decision-making was not limited to a few male members of a committee behind closed doors! (Matthew 18:17 New Living Translation) If the person still refuses to listen, take your case to the church. Then if he or she won’t accept the church’s decision, treat that person as a pagan or a corrupt tax collector) Scripturally, excluding a person from the church is preceded by admonition and counsel; Shunning is only employed in cases of [[bona fide heresy, obdurate divisiveness, or blatant, unrepentant sin]]; and it is a last resort. After ex-communication, the relationship between the former member and the church naturally changes, and the “shunning command”—not to eat with such a person—may come into play. However, the church still has the responsibility to pray for the one being disciplined and to extend forgiveness when repentance is evident. Shunning, as defined as a refusal to speak to someone or a total severing of all ties, goes beyond what the Bible advocates. Shunning, as defined as a refusal to speak to someone or a total severing of all ties, goes beyond what the Bible advocates. As mentioned what is spiritual manipulation? To manipulate is to negotiate, control, or influence for one’s own advantage. Spiritual manipulation is a technique used by some abusive churches and cults to control individuals and acquire gain, all the while giving the impression that their teachings are based on the Bible. Another form of spiritual manipulation occurs when abusive churches and cults twist Scripture to give more authority to the leadership and keep the members under their control. One example is the use of Hebrews 13:17 as a basis for demanding unquestioning loyalty and obedience to the leaders. Some religious groups view questioning the leaders as tantamount to questioning God. Some leaders claim to have divine authority and approval; thus, to disobey them is to disobey God. This is perhaps the most pernicious form of spiritual manipulation, and it has no place in a true church. A characteristic of spiritually abusive systems is that a misplaced sense of loyalty is fostered and even demanded. This is not about loyalty to Christ, but about loyalty to an organization, church, or leader/s in this case (the governing body of Jehovah’s witnesses). Because authority is assumed or legislated, following that authority must also be legislated. This is accomplished by setting up a system where disloyalty or disagreement with the leadership is construed as disobeying God!. That should sound a bell of alarm in every one of Jehovah’s witness’s minds. Shunning is scripture but applied as a last resort, and following sound scriptural doctrine on its application.
