Fred Franz – Recompensado Por Ser Inepto

When Prophecy Fails — The 1975 Fiasco Viewed from Inside Bethel

Fred Franz – Rewarded For Being Inept
January 11, 2022Barbara Anderson
In the spring of 1975, Frederick W. Franz, considered since the mid-1920s the “official oracle” of the Watchtower, underlined the urgency of the work of Christian preaching during his public speeches. Why is that? Because I believed that 6,000 years of human history would end that next September or a little later.

Franz said the time coincided with the human species on the verge of starvation, as well as facing pollution poisoning and destruction by nuclear weapons. In conversations that go back to the mid-60s, Franz emphasized that “Time is short. Time is running out, there’s no doubt about that.” The expectation fostered by Franz was that, the battle of Armageddon would happen by the autumn of 1975, and the long-awaited thousand-year reign of Christ would begin.

A staff worker at the headquarters, he wrote,

“Proclaiming 1975 had helped to generate tangible excitement about the closeness of Armageddon and had almost doubled the number of Witnesses. Record numbers were being baptized and we were working day and night at the factory in Brooklyn to supply the evangelist Witnesses with literature to distribute door to door. We were riding an emotional surge of enthusiasm, full of confidence in our prophetic expectations. As the 6,000-year-old timeline became questionable, however, things began to unravel.

“As the year 1975 progressed without an “End” in sight, the suppressed doubts began to arise among many other Witnesses as well. Was the End really so imminent? Many of us had said that the exact time of the End was not important. We had dedicated our lives to Jehovah and would continue in His organization regardless. Still, we had made life decisions based on the Watchtower Society’s 1975 timeline. Some of us let higher education pass. Others had missed business opportunities or spent assets because “the time left was short.” Some Witnesses had deferred marriage or having children.”

When Prophecy Fails — The 1975 Fiasco Viewed from Inside Bethel
The closer September 1975 came, the more Franz backtracked, as uncertainty grew and this could be seen in papers in the Watchtower literature. After 1975 came and went, Jehovah’s Witness leaders began to blame the flock for getting ahead of Jehovah or accused them of reading more than had actually been stated about the 1975 prediction, much to the dismay of many of the Witnesses.

About two years later, on June 22, 1977, two weeks after the third president of the Watch Tower Society, Nathan H. Knorr died, 83-year-old Frederick W. Franz, was elected president for the office of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, Inc.

Reporting on the election, note how Franz was described in the August 1, 1977 Watchtower :

“His extraordinary reputation as an eminent biblical scholar and his tireless work in the interests of the Kingdom have won him the trust and loyal support of Jehovah’s Witnesses everywhere.”

Really?-“Everywhere”? It’s not exactly true! Harry Peloyan, the editor of Wake Up!, was furious that “Freddy” was elected president by the other members of the Ruling Corps, as were other whistleblowers at the headquarters. Peloyan went to see Lloyd Barry to tell him of his resentment and that of other senior staff members, as it was Franz who came up with the 1975 fiasco, which resulted in as many as 500,000 Witnesses leaving the faith and the organization’s near collapse.

Donations declined. Subscriptions for magazines the Watchtower and the Awakening! were few and far between. For many, electing Franz to the presidency looked as if he had been rewarded by the debacle of 1975. Barry tried to defend the election by saying Franz was next in line for the presidency, but he had no weight with those who resented the choice made for the reasons given here and who believed Franz should have been overlooked and degraded. The sentiment among many at headquarters was that ineptitude should not be rewarded.

Incidentally, a reporter, who worked for Time magazine, interviewed Franz when he became president of the WTB & TS in 1977 (he had been vice president of the Watch Tower Society). That interview, in fact, resulted in a story that appeared in the July 11, 1977, issue of Time magazine.

Privately, the reporter said that in all his years as a reporter interviewing “important” people, after spending an hour with Fred Franz, he came away with the impression that Freddie was so deranged that he was “certifiably insane.”
